Dear Friends – Tales from the Den
A friend of mine recently got in touch to say that his band was releasing a new album. I’d never heard the Dear Friends’ music before, but I said I’d take a listen. There’s always a bit of pressure to like music when you know the people involved, but luckily for me, it really wasn’t hard to like this album. The music is acoustic, and folksy, which is my kind of style. There are emotional songs, which build and build, and that have lovely harmonies. Also, there’s some beautiful piano tinkling it’s way through the tracks, which always makes me happy. Oh, and in The Whistler, there’s a HORN SECTION. The joy! Every band should have…

Time May Change Me – Saying Goodbye to Bowie
I remember waking that morning, glancing at my phone, and it was the first thing I saw; David Bowie has died. I had a jolt to the stomach. I really couldn’t believe it. When someone is so famous and talented, and has created such an enormous body of eclectic work, they somehow become superhuman. We don’t imagine they’re able to submit to the pesky, every day nonsense of mortality. It can’t be possible that Bowie was simply human, after all. Can it? I listened to BBC 6 Music all day long. Lauren Lavern somehow managed to put into words how everyone was feeling. She said that it’s ok to be truly upset and to take the loss…

PREVIEW: Foxes and Convicts Christmas Special
To celebrate some amazing music sessions that took place throughout the year, Sean Murricane recorded a Foxes and Convicts Christmas Special for Leeds Indie Radio. It will air this Thursday, and here’s the trailer to give you a tingly taste of what’s to come: (Marvellous camera work don’t you think?!) Emilia and I went down to Dock St Markets in Leeds for the recording, and it was a perfect venue for festive stew eating, song singing and nattering with brilliantly talented and lovely Leeds folk. Don’t miss it! It’s a Christmas cracker of a show so grab a sherry and settle yourself in a cosy chair to have some festive…

Kate Bush returns with 50 Words for Snow
I flipping love Kate Bush, so the news that her new album was out was incredibly exciting to me. Earlier this year she released Director’s Cut (a reworking of some tracks from two of her previous albums), which I confess I’ve yet to listen to. 50 Words for Snow, being an entirely new creation, seemed much more appealing to me and it hasn’t disappointed. Kate Bush tends to be an elusive creature, but she was recently interviewed by the brilliant Lauren Laverne on 6 Music. This rare interview gave me an insight to how Kate’s fame and success isn’t at the forefront of her mind at all, but seems to…

Sleeping Giant
Mr M’s fantastic band, March of Dimes, has a new single out and it’s a corker! Sleeping Giant makes me nostalgic for something but I can’t quite put my finger on what it is. (Although having a 3 week old little lass, perhaps it’s just sleep?!) I love the sound of the track, which has something reassuring in it and feels like late summer sun filled afternoons. Take a listen and if you like it, which I’m sure you will, buy a copy! £1.50 for two tracks is a total bargain. Please support this fantastic talent from Leeds! March of Dimes at The Brudenell Social Club
March of Dimes played the Brudenell at last!! HURRAH. They are my favourite Leeds band, but then Mr M is the bass player, so I am perhaps a tiny bit on the biased side. If you don’t live in Leeds, or haven’t heard of the Brudenell, it’s a fantastic gig venue in Leeds. It’s set out in an old cabaret style, and is an intimate setting for a fantastic range of artists. The Brudenell is a gem of a venue for the local music scene in Leeds, but it’s reputation is such that it also attracts bands large and small from around the world. It’s a very relaxed place, and…

Foxes and Convicts: The Leeds Indie Radio Sessions
Every Thursday at 7pm Leeds Indie Radio is host to Foxes and Convicts. This show is based on acoustic sets from a special recording session that took place at Hope House Records in February. Exciting and extremely talented bands from around Leeds took part, including March of Dimes, Tag Team Preacher (whose voices sounded incredible in their stripped down performance) and Secret Sirens. Sean Murricane is the entertaining weekly host to this exciting show, which is already halfway through it’s current run. Show 5 airs on Thursday 12th May, and features Chris Selman (love the website design!), Daniel Pearson and Charlie Barnes. The radio show has been incredibly popular so far,…

A Deeper Understanding of Kate Bush in 2011?
Kate Bush is creating again! This is great news for fans such as myself. I was, however, a little disappointed to learn that her next album, Director’s Cut, will be a reworking of tracks taken from her two earlier albums; The Sensual World (1989) and The Red Shoes (1993). Deeper Understanding is the first single from this reworked collection: The song is a good choice as it’s probably a lot more relevant now then it was in 1989, and I imagine a lot of people will relate to it. (If you don’t know it, the song is about someone who being lonely, spends more and more time on their computer,…
